Run to the Mountain: The Story of a Vocation: The Journals of Thomas Merton, Vol. I, 1939-1941
Patrick Hart (ed). These journals cover Merton’s premonastic life & are the only extant journals from this period. The journal reflects the life of a young intellectual living at 35 Perry St. in Greenwich Village, & teaching at Columbia University Extension. He had received his Masters from Columbia in 1938 on “Nature & Art in William Blake” & was contemplating a doctorate on the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, but it never became a reality. We see here a 24-year-old writer, clearly ambitious & eager to get published, offering his first novels to any number of publishing houses, only to be greeted with a rejection slip.
