Military Methods of the Art of War: A Brilliant Collaboration by the Great-Grandson of Sun-Tzu
Sun Pin (au); Ralph D. Sawyer (tr) (in). The recent popularity in America of Sun-tzu’s “Art of War” has heightened awareness of the great Chinese tradition of writing on the theory & practice of war. This tradition emphasizes that warfare is as much the deployment of spiritual & mental forces as of combat forces, as much a matter of patience & attention as of brute strength. However, other significant texts followed in its wake. Foremost is “Military Methods of the Art of War,” written in the 4th cent. B.C. by the general Sun Pin. It is both an extension of the strategic philosophy of the earlier work & a development of a new strategic style. The text was recovered in 1972. Here, Sawyer has translated the salvaged original, & has provided extensive commentary & notes, as well as a historical intro.
