To support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army has focused its ground force training on preparing units for counter-insurgency operations. With the withdrawal from Iraq, fewer units are engaged in counter-insurgency operations and now have more time to train for full spectrum operations. In 2011 the Army established the full spectrum training mile metric (FSTMM).
