Sun W. Chun. Considers whether the Dept. of Energy (DOE) should fund the demonstration of the Liquid Phase Methanol (LPMEOH) process. If approved, the DOE would provide partial funding for a 260 ton/day methanol facility at the Eastman Chemical site in Kingsport, TN. The proposed project is to demonstrate on a commercial scale the production of methanol from coal-derived synthesis gas using the LPMEOH process. The methanol produced will be used as a chemical feedstock &/or as an alternative fuel in transportation applications. DME would be produced as a mixed co-product with methanol. No negative environmental concerns were identified.
