Profiles of Activities to Reduce Perinatal Transmission of HIV: Assessing the Response
Michelle Renaud & Elizabeth Kresse. In Feb. 1994 the NIH released preliminary results of clinical trials demonstrating that Zidovudine (ZDV), also known as AZT, can reduce perinatal transmission of HIV by as much as two-thirds when administered to women during pregnancy & delivery & to infants from 6 weeks after birth. Based on qualitative case study data in 6 states & Puerto Rico, this report focuses on the factors affecting health departments, other government agencies, service providers, & women as they responded to the findings & subsequent PHS recommendations on HIV counseling & testing of pregnant women & the implementation of the ZDV regimen.
