Function-Based Rehabilitation Classification: Abstract, Executive Summary, Final Report & Appendix A
Margaret G. Stineman. Lack of case mix adjust. is reinforcing inequities in the selection & treat. of patients in inpatient medical rehabilitation (MR). This study developed & tested a series of patient classification systems for MR based on the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) of disability. The definitive system, referred to as FIM-Function Related Groups (FIM-FRGs), was developed using 85,447 discharges & explains more than 30% of variation in length of stay. The FIM-FRG system would encourage the timely discharge of patients & thus provide incentives for cost containment. The system, however, would not necessarily reinforce high quality care.
