Description
. A chronicle of the U.S. Navy’s activities in WW I in France. Covers the construction of the five 14” Railway naval guns & their railway carriages, the recruitment of personnel, the deployment of the batteries to Europe, & the employment of guns in combat. The battery units, manned by approximately 25 officers & 500 highly trained enlisted specialists, were commanded by Rear Admiral Charles P. Plunkett. Given their relatively long range & low trajectories, the guns reached far behind enemy lines with great destructive force. Photos & maps.
