Brittle Books: Reports of the Committee on Preservation & Access, Council on Library Resources
Harold Billings (au). These reports reflect the work of the Council on Lib. Resources, over a period of 18 months. They also cap a series of events that began in Dec. 1982, with a meeting of librarians, faculty, & univ. & foundation officers who were asked to consider the changing character of research lib. & the future needs of their users. The subject of preservation was a principal topic introduced at that meeting. A meeting held in Oct. 1983, concentrated on the nat. & regional aspects of collecting & preserving lib. materials. One of the most persistent & complicated elements of the preservation problem concerns “brittle books,” the shorthand term for past pub’s. produced on acid paper & now so deteriorated that they must be reproduced in some form or eventually they will be lost.
