Nuclear Security: Lessons to be Learned From Implementing NNSA’s Security Enhancements
Gary L. Jones. Includes 2 reports: (1) In the late 1990s, a number of incidents at nuclear weapons facilities highlighted security weaknesses at the Dept. of Energy (DoE). To address these weaknesses, DoE has developed numerous initiatives to improve nuclear security. In addition, Congress created the Nat. Nuclear Security Admin. (NNSA) as a separate agency within DoE. As a result of 9/11, improving security has taken on a higher priority. This report examines the extent to which: DoE & NNSA have implemented security initiatives at NNSA facilities, & NNSA has developed an organizational structure for security & a program to safeguard nuclear info. & materials. (2) “The NRC’s Reg’n. of Davis-Besse Regarding Damage to the Reactor Vessel Head” (Dec. 30, 2002).
