Observations & Modeling of Seismic Background Noise
Jon Peterson. This report had two purposes: (1) to present a catalog of seismic background noise spectra obtained from a worldwide network of seismograph stations; & (2) to refine & document models of seismic background noise that have been in use for several years as of 1993. With a single exception, all of the data used in this study were extracted from the digital data archive at the USGS’s Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory (ASL). This archive dates from 1972 when ASL first began deploying digital seismograph systems & collecting & distributing digital data under the sponsorship of DARPA. Chapters: The Database; Data Preparation; Station Noise Spectra; & Noise Models. Illustrations.
