ATSDR has long advocated a comprehensive approach to promoting the environmental health of children. Haz. waste sites are prevalent throughout the U.S., & approx. 1,500 are on the Nat. Priorities List (NPL). ATSDR estimates that some 1.3 million children under 6 years of age live within 1 mile of the borders of at least one NPL site, a large number of young children at potential health risk.
