Fred Upton (ed.). In Nov. 2000 ICANN (Internet Corp. for Assigned Names & Numbers) selected 7 new top-level domain names to add to those already in use (.com, .net, & .org): .biz, .info, .pro, .name, .museum, .aero, & .coop. Also, 37 other applicants were not selected, & others could not afford the $50,000 application fee or chose not to apply because they question ICANN’s authority to play God with respect to approving new names. Witnesses: Elana Broitman, register.com; Vinton Cerf, ICANN; Alan Davidson, Ctr. for Democ. & Tech.; A. Michael Froomkin, Univ. of Miami School of Law; Leah Gallegos, AtlanticRoot Network, Inc.; Kenneth Hansen, NeuStar; Lou Kerner, .tv; & David Short, IATA.
