Increasing the Mission Capacity of the Attack Submarine Force (SSN)
Eric J. Labs (a.); Dan L. Crippen (preface). Examines whether the Navy can meet its goals without increasing the number of SSNs, which would require substantial funds. Looks at the missions & modernizations of the SSN fleet & analyzes the budgetary implications both of maintaining that fleet at 55 & building additional submarines. Evaluates three options to increase the mission capability of the SSN force, including changing operating concepts & basing locations. Those options would enable a force of 55 SSNs to provide the same number of missions days by 2015 & 2025 that 68 or 76 attack submarines, respectively, would provide under current policies -- at substantially lower cost than building more submarines.
