Description
The irradiation of Congressional mail beginning in Nov. 2001 followed the detection of anthrax spores in 16 Congressional offices. It represented the first use of the irradiation process to eradicate anthrax spores from the mail delivery system. Beginning in Jan. 2002, when the U.S. Postal Service began delivering irradiated mail to Congressional offices, there were numerous employee complaints of adverse health symptoms apparently caused by contact with irradiated mail. This report provides a detailed account of the progress of the investigation, as well as recommendations for certain additional studies of the mail, and interim precautions to limit employee exposure to irradiated mail pending completion of the additional studies.
