The higher rates of sickness and death that many racial and ethnic minorities experience compared to the white majority not only take their toll in pain and suffering, but extract enormous social and economic costs that burden those affected, their families, and society as a whole. While such gaps in health status are sufficient cause for alarm, population trends indicate that today’s racial and ethnic minority groups collectively will emerge as the majority population in America by mid-century. The government has targeted the elimination of racial and ethnic health disparities in 6 major areas by the year 2010: infant mortality; cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV infection/AIDS, and immunizations.
