Euphoria on the Rocks: Understanding Crack Addiction: A Reprint from “Federal Probation”
Edward M. Read (au)
Supervision of the crack addict presents a daunting challenge to even the most seasoned probation officer. Crack cocaine is powerfully addictive, reasonably cheap to buy in small quantities, & destroys lives at an alarming rate. Probation officers are not alone in their desperation. The crack cocaine problem confounds experienced treatment professionals as well. This article unveils the shroud of mystique that surrounds crack cocaine. Unless crack addiction is understood for what it is, & unless this understanding evolves into a factual knowledge basis, probation officers working with its victims will increasingly “burn out.” Frustration will lead to more & more cynicism, resulting in unnecessary negative fallout for all concerned. The focus here is to help the supervising officer understand the drug itself, the dynamics of addiction to it, & how to better assess a person’s dependency on it. A concluding section introduces the concept of “empathic supervision,” argued as the most effective way to reasonably approach both client accountability mandates & positive supervision outcome.
