Status and Trend of Late-Successional and Old-Growth Forest: Northwest Forest Plan -- The First 10 Years (1994-2003)
Melinda Moeur (au)
The status & trend of late-successional & old-growth forest on 24 mill. acres of land managed by the Forest Service in the NW Forest Plan area were monitored between 1994 & 2003. They used remotely sensed change detection to track losses of older forests on federally managed lands to stand-replacing harvest & wildfire; analyzed the amounts & spatial distribution of older forests by using the mapped data; & performed stat. analysis on inventory plot info. collected on Forest Service lands. The initial amount, distribution, & arrangement of older forest on federally managed appears to have met or exceeded NW Forest Plan expectations. But the large amount of older forest susceptible to catastrophic wildfire may be a concern for managers. Color illus.
