Description
Fredrika Bremer came to the U.S. in 1849 & remained for two years, during which she traveled about extensively. This volume sheds new light on the literary & social contacts she had with Americans. While journeying in 27 states she wrote letters to her sister in Sweden. They later appeared in her book ‘Hemmen i den nya verlden” (1853-1854), which was translated into English as “Homes of the New World” (1853). She also contributed a number of articles, stories, & poems to “Sartain’s Union Mag.,” a Phila. literary periodical. Her social impressions of America had a profound effect upon her later writings. For ex., the novel “Hertha” (1856), whose theme is women’s rights, was inspired by her observations on the status of women in the U.S. Illustrations.
