Public schools are the major providers of mental health services (MHS) for school-aged children. This study provides the first nat. survey of MHS in a rep. sample of 83,000 public elem., middle, & high schools & their associated school districts in the U.S. The study identified: the mental health problems most frequently encountered in the U.S. public school setting & the MHS delivered; the admin. arrangements for the delivery & coord. of MHS in schools; the types & qualifications of staff providing MHS in schools; & issues related to funding, budgeting & resource allocation, & use of data regarding MHS. The findings provide new info. about the role of schools in providing MHS, & how these services are organized, staffed, funded, & coordinated. Ill.
