The group of islands known by the term Ryukyu (modern Okinawa) forms a chain of small islands stretching from Japan to Taiwan. The Ryukyus were under strong cultural influences from China and Japan and, to a lesser extent, from Korea and SE Asia. This monograph provides a history of the Ryukyu trading kingdom and its high standard of civilization. Discusses lacquer produced in Ryukyu and its influences from China and Japan. An extensive Ryukyu Cultural Survey was undertaken in 1960. The survey lists some 100 pieces of lacquer traditionally assoc. with the Islands. Also discusses “Study of Ryukyu Lacquer Wares,” pub. in 1889, which covers the history of the mfg. of lacquer in Okinawa from the beginning of the 17th cent. onwards. 50+ illus.
