James Wilson (au); J. H. Powell (in)
Reprint of a document in the handwriting of James Wilson which is in Dr. Benjamin Rush’s papers at The Library Co. of Phila. It consists of 39 numbered pages, small folio (32 x 18 cm.). Julian Boyd first called attention to the document in his article on James Wilson in the Dict. of Amer. Bio. Lyman Butterfield studied it in the course of his preparatory survey for an edition of Rush’s letters. During the exhibition at The Free Lib. of Phila. on “The Voice of the Old Frontier,” Nov. 1 to Dec. 20, 1945, it was on display as a significant illustration of the thinking of Eastern leaders about Western lands in the closing years of the 18th century. This essay by James Wilson, Justice of the Federal Supreme Court, was presented by him to Dr. Benjamin Rush.
