Description
Japanese research on ocean waves and their interactions with offshore structures ranges over a broad spectrum of activities and applications. Many of the research activities aim at introducing new techniques for wave measurement, generation, and modification. During the last 2 weeks of Sept. 1989, both before and after the Fifth International Conference on Numerical Ship Hydrodynamics held in Hiroshima, Japan, author Henry T. Wang made a series of visits to 11 Japanese marine engineering research institutes to survey the latest research activities on ocean waves and their interactions with offshore structures. This is one of the major research areas for this island nation, which at the time was the world’s leading shipbuilder and much of whose land is located within 60 miles of a seashore.
