Description
For 150 years, Philadelphia’s Girard College has provided disadvantaged children an opportunity for educational excellence. Though the reputation of the school and its alumni is widespread, less is known of the founding of the College and the extraordinary story behind the design and construction of its first buildings. The building project brought together the talents and visions of three of the most influential men of the 19th century: millionaire merchant and philanthropist, Stehen Girard; Grecophile financier, Nicholas Biddle; and bricklayer-become-architect, Thomas Ustick Walter. The work these men accomplished is testimony to their inspiration, wisdom and perseverance. Each had a keen awareness of his own personal contribution to posterity. A remarkably complete record of that work, though long unnoticed, survives as an unparalled collection of drawings and building documents at Girard College and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia. This booklet describes some highlights of this collection. Illus.
