The overall goal of the U.S. Nat. Drug Control Strategy, which is prepared by the White House Office of Nat. Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), is to reduce illicit drug use in the U.S. One of the strategy’s priorities is to disrupt the illicit drug marketplace. To this end, since FY2000, the U.S. has provided about $397 million to support Mexican counter-narcotics efforts. According to the Dept. of State, much of the illicit drugs consumed in the U.S. flows through or is produced in Mexico. This report examines: (1) developments in Mexican drug production & trafficking since calendar year 2000; & (2) U.S. counter-narcotics support for Mexico since FY2000. Includes recommendations. Charts & tables.
