On the Evolution of Income Inequality in the United States: A Reprint from the “Economic Quarterly”
Kevin A. Bryan (au); Leonardo Martinez (au)
Discusses the evolution of income inequality (IE) in the U.S. Focuses mainly on the evolution of IE since the 1960s because more data is available for this period than for earlier periods. Documents that IE rose in the U.S. during the period under study. Documents periods characterized by a decline in real income for lower income groups. Shows that the increase in IE is concentrated among individuals with higher income inequality (and, in fact, may actually have decreased). Summarizes the findings of studies on IE trends between the 1820s and the 1960s. Shows that the recent period of increasing IE followed a period of decreasing IE since World War I, which in turn followed a period of increasing IE in the 19th century. Tables and graphs.
