Cows on Parade in Chicago
Mary Ellen Sullivan (au); Richard M. Daley (pf); Simon Koenig (ph)
Hardcover (no d.j.)
Why cows? And why Chicago? It all started with businessman Peter Hanig, who, while on vacation in Switzerland in 1998, stumbled onto Zurich’s massive public art project, “Cow Parade,” and became enchanted with it. The exhibit brought more than one million additional visitors to Zurich, and people fell in love with the cow sculptures. Hanig thought why not host a similar exhibit here? He persuaded city officials to support a similar exhibit, with about 300 cows concentrated mostly along Michigan Ave., the Loop, River North and the new Museum Campus. Chicago’s largest temporary public art exhibit was unveiled on June 15, 1999. This delightful book tells the story of the exhibit and is filled with color photos of these beautiful and whimsically decorated cows.
