Stephen L. Caldwell (au)
Hurricane Katrina (HK) was one of the largest natural disasters in our nationís history. The Coast Guard (CG) played a key role in the planning, response, & recovery efforts for HK in three mission areas: search & rescue, marine pollution response, & management of maritime commerce. This report focuses on: (1) the factors that prepared the CG to perform these three mission areas in the aftermath of HK; (2) the CGís response to HK, the challenges it faced in performing its missions, & its efforts to mitigate these challenges; & (3) the implications & lessons learned, as identified by the CG, regarding the effect of HK surge operations on its people, assets, financial resources, & operations.
