Battle of the Bulge
John Toland (au)
In Dec. 1944, the German army had been retreating since its defeat in Normandy 5 months earlier. But at 5:00 am on Dec. 16th the German artillery suddenly bombarded the peaceful Ardennes front, initiating what came to be known as the Battle of the Bulge. It was the greatest pitched battle ever fought by the Americans, & their only major struggle in the dead of winter. Before it was over, they had suffered over 80,000 casualties. The story of the Bulge is told here from the point of view of individuals on both the German & Allied sides. It is an astonishing story of mass surrender & massacre occurring side by side with comic opera & unusual heroism. This was Hitlerís last desperate thrust, his final gamble to win the war. Reprint of the 1959 edition. Maps.
