Stephen Brook (au). The rule of the Habsburgs began during the time of the Holy Roman Empire & lasted into the 20th cent., encompassing parts of Germany, Austria, Hungary, Spain, & Italy. The Habsburg Empire was never more than a collection of estates, as each city, region, & culture was allowed to retain its own identity. Vienna was thought of as the Imperial City, Budapest its rival, & Prague was the Habsburgs’ Bohemian capital. Today, castles, palaces, & churches stand as physical reminders of their Austro-Hungarian creators. Looks at the everyday aspects of life in each city -- the food & wine, the culture, the architecture, the politics, & above all, the people.
