Description
Kerry Segrave. This book examines the history of tipping, primarily in the U.S., over the last 120 years. The custom was brought from Europe, but Americans have been largely critical of it. The first chapter provides a brief overview of the practice of tipping. After each chapter discussing how tipping evolved & was practiced in a given period, there follows a chapter relating how consumers responded, from weary acquiescence to ordinances banning the practice. Some of these ordinances -- long since repealed -- are reproduced in Appendix 2. Bibliography.
