George Catlin: Painter of the Indian West
Mark Sufrin. A biography of George Catlin, born in the early 19th century, who studied law but gave it up for art & painted miniature portraits. Then he saw a delegation of Plains Indians, proud & dignified in decorated robes & feathered headdresses, & it changed his life. Between 1831 & 1836 Catlin traveled west by riverboat, canoe, & on horseback. He painted portraits of tribal leaders & scenes of life & culture as he visited the Cheyenne, Sioux, Blackfeet, Crow, Mandan, & other plains tribes. His writings, & collection of Indian clothing, housing, & weapons, also inspired anthropologists, artists, & writers to record the Early West. Juvenile audience.
