Description

David F. Labaree (au). Provides an analytical history of the origins & development of Central H.S., the first HS in Phila. & a model for many subsequent institutions. Using Central as a case study, Labaree argues that the APHS can be viewed as the product of both democratic politics & capitalist markets: although it was originally intended to produce informed citizens for the new republic, the HS, with its meritocratic emphasis, instead became a vehicle for conferring status on the select group that was educated there. The struggle between these 2 goals -- one leading to political equality & the other reinforcing economic inequality -- has characterized its history ever since. In order to achieve its democratic goals, the APHS must abandon its long-standing links to the market. Illus.
