High & Mighty: SUVs -- The World’s Most Dangerous Vehicles & How They Got That Way
Keith Bradsher (au). Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) have taken over America’s roads. Ad campaigns promote SUVs as safer & “greener” than ordinary cars & easy to handle in bad weather. But the reality is that SUV occupants are at least as likely to die in a crash & much more likely to be paralyzed. SUVs are hard to control, esp. in emerg., & inflict horrific injuries on the occupants of other vehicles they hit. They also guzzle gas, make global warming worse, & emit up to 5 times as much air pollution per mile as cars. The auto industry lobbied Congress to classify them not as passenger cars but as light trucks, which are subject to less stringent reg’s. on safety, gas mileage, & smog. SUVs are poor choices for teenagers, have worse brakes than cars, & have a serious rollover problem. Illus.
