Queer Afterlife of Vaslav Nijinsky
Kevin Kopelson (au). Provides an impressionistic account of the dancerís homoerotic career, an analysis of his gay male reception, & an exploration of the limitations of that analysis. The impressionistic account focuses on significant gestures made by Nijinsky in key roles, incl. the Golden Slave, the Specter of the Rose, Narcissus, the Faun, & Petrouchka. The analysis of his reception is deconstructive. The exploration of the analytical limitations sets the stage for cultural studies. Nijinskyís notoriety was based on his sexual relationship with Serge Diaghilev, upon his having been one of the first sensuous young men to dominate a Western stage, & upon his mastery of leading roles & body languages that had very little to do with conventional masculinity. B&W photos.
