Forgotten Ireland: Scenes From the 19th Century Camera
Martin Howard (au). In Irelandís Nat. Lib. (NL) are 40,000 negatives that have survived from the last decades of the 19th cent. Taken by Robert French for his employer William Lawrence, who operated a successful emporium in Dublin, they offer a unique glimpse of a bygone age in Ireland. Over a period of 35 years French traveled all over Ireland, carefully photographing the towns & countryside, the monuments & places of natural beauty. His photos were sold as authentic scenes of Irish life in souvenir albums or as picture postcards. The NL bought the collection; this book includes the best of those photos. Accompanied by an informative narrative, it shows a country approaching the most crucial time in its history yet still clinging to the ways of the past.
