Description
Everett L. DeGolyer, Jr. (au). A collection of 102 black & white photos showing the history of transcontinental railroads in the U.S., from an exhibit by the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, TX. On May 10, 1869, the Atlantic & Pacific coasts of this nation were united by iron rail. A trip form the East to West Coast that once required months was reduced to days. The Golden Era of railroading coincides precisely with the golden era of photography. This catalog shows the railroad in its environment, with rugged topography in the west, & in all kinds of weather. It also demonstrates visually that one railroad is different than another. Since many of the pioneer lines have been abandoned, a minor effort has been made to illustrate what might be termed railroad archaeology.
