In the Shadow of Saddam
Mikhael Ramadan. Shortly after becoming Pres. of Iraq in 1979, Saddam Hussein met Ramadan, brother-in-law of one of his senior officials. Ramadan resembled Saddam closely & after some minor plastic surgery he became the dictator’s official double. Ramadan wrote this account “to tell the world about the hell that is Saddam’s Iraq.” Standing in for Saddam was lucrative but dangerous. On a visit to Kuwait during the Gulf War he was wounded & captured by U.S. forces. There he met Sophie, an Iraqi-American army nurse. An Iraqi unit attacked the camp & took Ramadan & Sophie back to Baghdad, where they were imprisoned & tortured. A Kurdish guerrilla force freed them & they were airlifted out of the country. They now live in perpetual fear of retribution. Color photos.
