In Search of Deep Throat: The Greatest Political Mystery of Our Time
Leonard Garment (au). Garment helped to organize Nixon’s 1968 comeback campaign, & was installed as special consultant to the Pres. on domestic policy from 1969 to 1974. Here he attempts to solve the puzzle of the identity of Deep Throat, the mysterious government insider who, in secret encounters, passed information to Bob Woodward, who along with Carl Bernstein reported on Watergate for the Washington Post. Their book, All the President’s Men, told the behind-the-scenes story of the two reporters’ news gathering. In this book Garment provides evidence for his claim that Deep Throat was John Sears. At the time of Watergate, Sears was an obscure political operative who had worked in the 1968 Nixon presidential campaign &, briefly, in the Nixon White House.
