Description
This recently declassified report shows that there was a genuine risk of war with the Soviet Union in 1983. From the late 1970s to the mid-1980s, the Soviet military forces and intelligence services were redirected in ways that suggested that the Soviet leadership was seriously concerned about the possibility of a sudden strike launched by the US and its NATO allies. These changes were accompanied by public and private leadership statements arguing that the US was seeking strategic superiority in order to be able to launch a nuclear first strike. These actions and statements are often referred to as the period of the war scare. The report states that the US may have inadvertently placed our relations with the Soviet Union on a hair trigger during the 1983 NATO nuclear release exercise called Able Archer 83. It discusses in detail the changes in Soviet military and intelligence arrangements. This is a print on demand report.
