Patrick P. Ońˇ╗Carroll, Jr. (fr)
This audit report studied 1,532 beneficiaries who received disability benefits in Oct. 2003 to determine the amount of overpayments in the Social Security Admin.ńˇ╗s (SSAńˇ╗s) disability programs between Oct. 2003 and Feb. 2014 (just over a 10-year period). Based on the sample, the report estimated: (1) SSA assessed overpayments totaling about $16.8 billion between Oct. 2003 and Feb. 2014 for approx. 4 million beneficiaries who were in current payment status in Oct. 2003; (2) SSA recovered about $8.1 billion of the $16.8 billion in overpayments it assessed; and (3) SSA prevented about $8 billion in overpayments between Oct. 2003 and Feb. 2014 to approx. 1 million beneficiaries in current pay status in Oct. 2003 by suspending monthly payments. Additionally, the overpayment rate in FY 2014 was 3.1% of all benefits paid that year. Figures and tables. This is a print on demand report.
