Status of Actions Taken to Improve the Processing of Tax-Exempt Applications Involving Political Campaign Intervention
Michael E. McKenney (ed)
In a May 2013 audit report, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) determined that, due to poor management, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) used inappropriate criteria that identified for review organizations applying for tax-exempt status based upon their names or policy positions instead of indications of potential political campaign intervention. These applications (here referred to as potential political cases) were forwarded to a team of specialists for review. This follow-up report concludes that the IRS has taken äóģsignificant actionsäó¯ to stop agents from targeting political groups based on their names and policy positions. It has: improved the processing of applications for tax-exempt status; eliminated intrusive, unnecessary questions; cleared a backlog of applications; and improved agentsäó» training, although more training is required. Figures. This is a print on demand report.
