Description
Given the millions of flights in the U.S. each year, runway safety is a critical safety area for the Federal Aviation Admin. (FAA) due to the risks associated with operating aircraft, vehicles, and pedestrians in a confined space at considerably different speeds. Although the U.S. commercial aviation industry is experiencing one of the safest periods in its history, several high-profile runway safety incidents -- known as runway incursions -- have incurred. FAA data show that from FY 2011 to FY 2013, the most serious runway incursions increased by more than 57%. In addition, the total number of runway incursions increased by 30%. This report evaluated FAAäó»s (1) progress in implementing initiatives to prevent runway incursions; and (2) effectiveness in reporting and evaluating runway incursions. Figures and tables. This is a print on demand report.
