Description
While the Federal Aviation Admin. (FAA) operates one of the worldäó»s safest aviation systems, runway safety remains a significant concern -- especially since runway incursions increased by 30% from FY 2011 to FY 2013 despite slight declines in air traffic operations during that time. FAA has made runway safety a key oversight priority and uses Airport Surface Detection Equipment-Model X (ASDE-X) to allow air traffic controllers to detect potential runway conflicts. FAA plans to integrate two runway safety systems with ASDE-X to give pilots a visible warning when runways are occupied by other aircraft and to provide simultaneous alerts for controllers and pilots of potential runway incursions and ground collisions. This report assessed FAAäó»s efforts to implement and integrate surface surveillance technologies. Figures and tables. This is a print on demand report.
