Women in the Labor Force: A Databook

The past several decades have been marked by notable changes in womenäó»s labor force activities compared to menäó»s, including increased labor force participation, employment growth in higher paying occupations, & gains in real earnings. In 2008, 59.5% of women were in the labor force; the overall unemployment rate for women was 5.4%, but rates varied by race and Hispanic ethnicity. This report presents historical and current labor force and earnings data for women and men from the Current Population Survey (CPS). The CPS is a national monthly survey of approx. 60,0000 households conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. The Technical Note at the end of this report provides a detailed description of the source of the data and an explanation of concepts and definitions used. Charts and tables.
