Several policies that would have reduced spending and increased revenues were poised to take effect at the end of 2012; collectively, these were referred to by some as the äóìfiscal cliff.äó Had these policies taken effect, it has been projected that the ensuing fiscal contraction would have resulted in a recession in 2013. On Jan. 2, 2013, the President signed H.R. 8, the Am. Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA, P.L. 112-240), which prevented most äóî but not all äóî of the fiscal cliff policies from going into effect. This Act was passed by the Senate on Jan. 1, 2013 by a vote of 89-8, and by the House later that day, 257-167. Title VI of the Act extends several expiring provisions in the Medicare and Medicaid programs and makes other changes in federally funded health programs.
