CMS Innovation Center: Early Implementation Efforts Suggest Need for Additional Efforts to Help Ensure Coordination with Other CMS Offices
Linda T. Kohn (au)
Spending on health care in the U.S. reached $2.6 trillion in 2010 and is expected to increase, with federal spending -- driven primarily by expenditures for Medicare and Medicaid -- accounting for a growing percentage of the total. Complicating these trends, recent evidence suggests that higher levels of health care spending do not always lead to enhanced quality of care. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) created the Innovation Center within the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The purpose of the Innovation Center is to test new approaches to health care delivery and payment äóî known as models äóî for use in Medicare or Medicaid. This report reviewed the implementation of the Innovation Center. It: (1) describes the centeräó»s activities, funding, organization, and staffing as of March 31, 2012; (2) describes the centeräó»s plans for evaluating its models and its own performance; and (3) examines whether efforts of the center overlap with those of other CMS offices and how the center coordinates with other offices. Tables. This is a print on demand report.
