This paper introduces a new measure of policies and regulations affecting the retailing industry. The authorsäó» retail restrictiveness index addresses 13 categories of nontariff measures (NTMs), including market entry restrictions and operational regulations. The authors produce index scores for 75 countries. Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand are among the most restrictive retail markets as measured by this index, while the U.S. is one of the worldäó»s most open. The authors use econometric äóìgravityäó models to examine how restrictiveness affects sales of multinational retailersäó» foreign affiliates, and find that hgh (restrictive) scores on their index are associated with decreased affiliate sales. Tables and figures. This is a print on demand report.
