Group Purchasing Organizations (GPO) for Health Care Providers: Federal Oversight and Self-Regulation
Linda T. Kohn (au)
Hospitals and other health care providers have faced pressures to address rising health care costs. They have increasingly relied on purchasing intermediaries known as GPO. The GPO, on behalf of their customers, negotiate contracts for products and services with vendors. Vendors pay fees to GPO, known as ńˇýcontract admin. fees,ńˇŁ which are based on a percentage of the costs of the products that GPO customers purchase through GPO-negotiated contracts. GPO formed a GPO membership assoc., the Healthcare Group Purchasing Industry Initiative (HGPII), in 2005. This report describes the oversight of GPO, incl.: (1) oversight of GPO since 2004 by govńˇ╗t agencies; and (2) GPO self-regulation through HGPII. A print on demand report.
