The Nationäó»s Report Card informs the public about the academic achievement of elementary and secondary students in the U.S. The Report cards communicate the findings of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), a continuing and nationally representative measure of achievement in various subjects over time. A representative sample of 122,000 eighth-graders participated in the 2011 NAEP science assessment, which is designed to measure studentsäó» knowledge and abilities in the areas of physical science, life science, and Earth and space sciences. Results show that the average 8th-grade science score increased from 150 in 2009 to 152 in 2011. The percentages of students performing at or above the Basic and Proficient levels were higher in 2011 than in 2009.
