Plutonium (PL) is vital to the nuclear weapons stockpile. Much of the nationäó»s current PL research capabilities are housed in aging facilities at Los Alamos Nat. Lab. in New Mexico. The Nat. Nuclear Security Admin. (NNSA) has decided to construct a new multibillion dollar facility to modernize the lab.äó»s capabilities to analyze and store PL. This report examined: (1) the cost and schedule estimates to construct the facility and the extent to which its most recent estimates reflect best practices; (2) options NNSA considered to ensure that needed PL research activities could continue; and (3) the extent to which NNSAäó»s plans reflected changes in stockpile requirements and other PL research needs.
